Our Methodology
How we research, evaluate, and compare credit cards and financial products.
Last updated: August 2026
Every credit card reviewed on this site is evaluated using a documented editorial framework. This page explains the criteria we consider and how we approach comparisons. Our goal is a methodology that is consistent, transparent, and explainable to U.S. readers. We do not produce a mathematical score; instead, we provide editorial assessments based on the areas described below.
Evaluation Areas
We consider the following areas when evaluating credit cards. Different factors may matter differently depending on the product category and the intended consumer. A travel rewards card is not judged by the same priorities as a secured credit-building card.
Rewards & Features
We look at the rewards structure — bonus categories, base earning rates, redemption flexibility, and any transfer partner networks. For cash back cards, we consider how easily rewards can be redeemed. For travel cards, we consider transfer partner availability and redemption options. We note where spending caps or category restrictions apply.
Fees & Costs
We evaluate the total annual cost of ownership: annual fee, foreign transaction fees, balance transfer fees, and other common charges. Where a card offers offsetting credits, we note that the effective cost may be lower than the stated annual fee. Cards with no annual fee are highlighted as low-cost options.
Benefits
We evaluate non-rewards benefits: travel protections (such as trip delay or baggage insurance), purchase protections, rental car coverage, lounge access, and partner perks. We focus on benefits that have practical value to typical consumers rather than theoretical benefits that require complex activation.
Accessibility & Eligibility
We consider the general credit profile a card is designed for, whether pre-qualification tools are available, and whether the issuer offers a path to credit-line increases through responsible use. This area is especially significant in our secured card and starter card coverage, where accessibility is a primary reader concern.
Overall Usefulness
We consider how well a card serves its intended audience. A card designed for frequent travelers is assessed differently from one designed for credit builders. We weigh the combination of rewards, fees, benefits, and accessibility against the card's stated purpose and target consumer.
Product Information
Product terms are checked against official issuer sources when content is created or updated. Because rates, fees, rewards, offers, and eligibility requirements can change, readers should verify current terms directly with the issuer before applying.
We do not claim that every figure on this website is continuously monitored or always current. Content reflects our best understanding at the time of publication or last update.
Review Cadence and Updates
We review and update content periodically and when material changes are identified. Card reviews are updated when we become aware of significant changes to APRs, annual fees, rewards structures, or offers.
We do not commit to a fixed review schedule. The frequency of updates depends on the product category and whether material changes have been identified.
Limitations and Disclosures
Our editorial assessments reflect a general consumer perspective. Your actual rewards value and overall experience will vary depending on your spending pattern, credit profile, and how you use the card. A card that suits one reader may not suit another.
We evaluate cards available to consumers in the United States. We do not review business credit cards or charge cards as a primary focus, though we may reference them in comparison context.
Not all cards covered on this site have affiliate relationships with us. The presence or absence of a commercial relationship has no effect on our editorial assessment. See our Editorial Policy for details on how we handle commercial relationships.
